. . . [not readable] for over a year was discharged Feb. 7, it is understood that he will go to work in a coal mine near Hooversville which is his hometown.

The new store room, in which food supplies for the company are kept, has been completed, and moved in and arranged. This store room which in many ways resembles a modern grocery store is under the competent management of Ivey Owens recently appointed Mess Store Keeper.

An addition has been built on the mess hall to house a new kitchen sink in which dishes, pots, and pans are washed. This new convenience has made a decided change in the appearance of the kitchen.

Now that all of the barracks have new roof jacks, it has been noticed that the barrack stoves draw better and do not need as much attention as before. Since their installation very little coal is required to keep the barracks comfortably warm.

The men of Barrack 1, under the direction of leader Frank King, the company’s first cook, have just finished painting the interior of their barrack. The rafters and cross beams are painted red, while the window frames and braces for clothes hangers are white.

Leader James Gibbs, who has been assigned to take charge of Barrack 4 has been doing splendid work. He has succeeded in putting his in first place twice for best all around general appearance and tied with No.3 once, since his appointment.

An Auburn motor has been placed in the west end of Barracks 5. This motor will be used only for instructive purposes, for the motor mechanics class, which will be taught by William Minard of Emporium. The upward trend in class attendance this year is a good sign of the interest that is being shown in the educational program of this company.

Several new classes and crafts have been introduced during the new year; leathercraft, weaving, motor mechanics, and a course in the PA Motor Code. The electrical class has installed a system of bells that connects Headquarters with the mess hall, supply room, infirmary, and the quarters of the senior foremen. It has also installed an auxiliary lighting system in the mess hall that eliminates the use of the generator during the early morning hours.

The addition of three typewriters to the educational equipment has been a big boost to the educational program. Typing classes are held every night. An attempt is made to give each man two lessons each week. The classes are taught by the Educational Adviser, and the WPA teachers, Mr. Dudley and Mr. [not readable].

Leathercraft and weaving are new types of classes and are progressing in a very encouraging pace. Table service is another, and prepares a person for a definite job when he leaves the CCC. Even though one has work of another type, one of these crafts used as a side line, or as a leisure time activity would add to ones income, besides the pleasure one gets from the work.

A new traveling library has been received and the books are at the disposal of the company. It includes fiction and non-fiction. Use your library, men. Reading is the greatest source of knowledge and knowledge cannot be taken away from you.

Chatterbox

A certain young man in camp has gone into the clothing business. Women’s clothing a specialty. How about this, EW?

There seems to be a movie romance in camp between a young blade of fashion and a fair young lass. But I gathered from his conversation that the big bad wolf was around the corner. Get our algebra down from the shelf – you’ll need it to figure this out, MC.

What causes people to forget their gloves or was it just a ruse to return to her house, MC??
