There is no royal road to learning. It has been only by diligent study and hard work that the great men of the world have reached the heights that they attained. Can we expect something for nothing when others have to work for what they get.
What does the CCC mean to you?
This question should be analyzed by all members of the Corps, because of the possibilities that it affords one.
There is the duty of each individual to the organization, to do those things that are necessary to the successful running of the organization and of which he has no control.
Besides the duty of the individual to the organization there is his duty to himself. This duty should have a prominent place in the mind of each enrollee. As it is through it that he strives for improvement. After work hours there are several hours each day which each enrollee uses as he sees fit. It is his duty to see that this leisure time is used to the best advantage. The use of this time decides whether one is to leave the corps as he came in or to ____ to better things. The opportunities of the Camps are unlimited. There are the organized classes, recreational activities, and the library, which are available for all enrollees. It is through the wise use of these facilities that one can strive to better himself intellectually and physically.
The classroom activities offer a wide variety of subjects from which one may choose, the recreational activities offer opportunities in organized play, and the library offers unlimited reading material, fiction and non-fiction. With these facilities at one’s disposal every effort should be made to make good use of them.
So the CCC should mean more to you than a day’s work, three meals a day and pay day at the end of the month. It should mean taking every advantage that the Corps offers _________ improvement.

Baseball season opens Memorial Day
The baseball team has started practice for the opening game with Penfield on Memorial Day. Only a few of the veterans of last year are on hand to answer to roll call. Those present were “Duke” Vinson, catcher; James Gibbs, second baseman; Harrison Dixon, shortstop; Walter Williams, right fielder; and Elwood Gaines, pitcher. Among the more promising new candidates are Henderson Fletcher, pitcher; “Flash” Dunlap, first baseman; Eugene Moraney, third baseman; Joseph Bourne, left field, Arthur Pindle, center field. There is lively competition for all positions not even the vets being assured of their jobs.
Musical notes
Harmony Four make a hit in Johnstown, Pa. On May 9th, Mother’s Day, Rev. the visiting minister to this Camp took the Harmony Four to his church in Johnstown to appear on a special Mother’s Day program. Rev. Lee is the pastor of the Duke Memorial Baptist Church. The quartette is composed of Lacy Blackstock, Morris Crabbe, George Jackson, and Edward Jackson, Master of Ceremonies. They mad their initial appearance at the morning services, singing “Love of the Lord,” “Rest of the Weary” and “Morning in the Land Will Soon be Over.” During the afternoon they sang at a Tea given for the benefit of the Church. Sunday night the quartette gave a concert, assisted by some of the best talent in Johnstown. The group was well received, and made a very favorable impression on the people.
Marylanders and Glee Club appear in Mother’s Day Programs. On May 9th the Glee Club and Marylanders, a quartette composed of enrollees from Maryland, appeared in Mother’s Day programs in Clearfield and Curwensville, Pa. at a special afternoon service in the Allan A.M.E. Church in Clearfield these groups rendered selections that were highly appreciated by all present. At night they went to Curwensville and participated in the services at the A.M.E. Church. They sang to an enthusiastic congregation, who expressed a desire to have them return at an early date. On May 16, the Glee Club and the Harmony Four made an appearance on a program at the Derrick Methodist Church, Phillipsburg [sic], Pa. They sang to a large audience of enthusiastic listeners. Both groups sang so well that it was difficult to determine just who was “Tops.”
The Glee Club, Quartettes, and Orchestra are rehearsing for an engagement at the St. Marys Theatre on June 4th. These groups are putting in long hours of practice and the members earnestly appling [sic] themselves so as to present a program worth seeing and hearing.
Increased interest is being shown in these groups and we are working towards one of the largest male choruses in the area.
The Orchestra, composed of Humphries, James, Owens, Hill and Ellison, is to be commended for the way they are working together to develop that brand of harmony that we all like.
Members of all groups are to be commended for their very appreciative cooperation in trying to make this night a success
EG has finally returned from the ‘Burg after a few days stay. Why does that man wait until C. W. returns to Camp before stating that he has planned to become a guest for the week??????
Ere Spent the Day
There must be some task wonderful I can perform today;
Some job undone I yet might do – Ere spent the day!
There must be some good counsel
Deep within the heart of me;
Which said may profit one who
Aren’t who yet may BE!
There must be some soul waywarding time’s relentless flight;
Some weak soul stray’d I yet
Might place in paths aright!
There must be some home shadow
Filled – Oh, memory please to know.
Some home unvisited by light
That yet might glow!
There must be some cause worthy
For my life to chance today;
Some cause unfought, I yet might
Fight – Ere spent the day

Leader Harold Johnson, Ass’t Leaders S__mi_ Brown and Hugh Ratchford were discharged this month to accept employment. In these men we have lost some of our best and most popular rated men.
Mr. Daniel Matthews, WPA Recreational director has severed his connections with the WPA and this Camp and gone to Washington to accept employment in that city. Best wishes for your success.
Among the visitors this month was Chaplain Gingerich who gave an inspiring talk to the Company.
Mr. Rudolph Powell, Forester, has been transferred from this camp to Camp 54, Chaneyville, Pa.
Support you[r] camp baseball team on to a successful season.
Hello, Fellows:
Back again and with all of the stuff. I promised that this month would bring news and more news – well, I’ll leave it to you.
The column must have stirred the ire of Camp Lovers. Anyhow, they trucked to the ‘Burg and have the “Belles” of the Burg that way!
Is it their musical ability or just over-whelming personality that has lifted the Quartette to such heights of popularity
MC, according to all reports – including his own, has quite a few of the “femmes” of the various surrounding towns all agog. Easy fellow, it’s so easy to climb up and “Faw Down.”
The overhead “Maestro” – Yu don’ know?? Why, Sir Duke of Camp Vann – has peddled his wares in Johnstown. Has he deserted the ‘Field?? You Ask!!
PW has resumed his trek to the Burg. Aha, my fine fellow, is it just spring or has one of the fair sex disturbed your well known calm?
Haven’t you heard the following flying around the Camp?
Cradle Rocker – But why, Duke??
Music Lover – I say; Cuz! L. B.
Sleeping Beauty – Well, well, G. J.
Sir Galahad – In his usual role of pleasing the fair ladies. (By going across town, Where?? Johnstown) E. J.
Is it true that H. D. is really planning on making the trip to Williamsport on the 31st? About time, my Fran
EG has finally returned from the Burg after a few days stay. Why does that man wait until C. W. returns to Camp before stating that he has planned to become a guest for the week???
GH was seen in Caledonia the other day. IN THE RAIN. Can it be that he has or did mistake Caledonia for the ‘Field??
GW has resumed his trekking to the ‘Burg. Bring back memories of a year ago this time. He and P. W. being the only ones of that qua[r]tette remaining.
DC must have found something very interesting in Curwensville. By the way, D. C., if your feet should bother you after that walk ask E. J. what he used for swelling after he experienced the same thing.
The Triangle mentioned last month is no more. The “Duke” won out.
It seems that I. H. likes variety of any kind just so it all comes from the ‘Burg. But why the “Sonny”????
I was told that L. B. told a certain young lady in DuBois that he would like the chance to prove himself a “He Man”. WHAT-HO, and a CHERIO!!! What is this?????
The balance this month has been in favor of the ‘Burg Belles. Come on Clearfield, never desert the race so easily.
Well, see you next month with more Ser____ MD MO !!
